so the big show was last night, and it was absolutely awesome. pandemonium backstage, excellence onstage. i wasn't supposed to be in the finale, and i didn't rehearse that part at all, but then at the last minute, the designer handed me an outfit and told me to put it on. fuck yeah. so that was cool.
what wasn't cool was the fact that my camera batteries died after just one shot backstage. fortunately lots of other people got pictures, so i should be getting some of those soon, once they are uploaded. i also got a bunch of professional shots taken once i got done with hair and makeup, and also during the show, and backstage, so with any luck i can get some copies of those as well. i'm hoping to get a few 8x11 glossies out of those shots too, so i can start building a portfolio. might have to pay for those, but hey, if they're good pics i'll pay.
so i'll post more on the show once i get some pictures.

my computer needs a cupholder. i mean really, where am i supposed to put my glass of wine while i'm typing a blog entry? it's too bad my cd drive is a slot instead of a tray... lol.
had a rehearsal tonight for the neodandi show... it's really coming together. we rehearsed tonight for the first time at trinity, where the show is... it is a fucking tight club. awesome furniture. i'm really getting stoked for the show. it'll also be kind of nice to be done with rehearsals for awhile. maybe i can start going to yoga again once a week or something. though i'll really be sad for it to be over, because then i won't really have a project.
though i did have an interview on friday with a guy whose friend is starting up this t-shirt company. no guarantees, but it's a lead. plus, i'd get some portfolio shots out of the deal.
i just got an email from the university of washington about an info session for the fulbright fellowship. because international relations is my bag, baby. though it did make me feel like a student again, to be getting spam about scholarships.
i am really getting antsy to go back to school. i'm about a fifth (F! I! F! FIF!) of the way through my fun little pretend biology textbook* and have just learned about the krebs (citric acid) cycle and glycolysis. it rings a bell, but seriously, i just don't absorb complex chemical reaction pathways without cute flash animations. i need to find some of those.
*the fun little pretend biology textbook is not really pretend, it's just little. and fun. i ordered it off of amazon because it was written by the prof that i'll theoretically have for bio 180, and it was only 15 bucks, but when it got here i discovered that it was an abridged edition for the university of texas. i got a good laugh out of that, they need abridged textbooks down there in austin, 'cause them t-sips can't read so good. heh. but, abridged or no, it's a good review since it's been 4? years since AP bio and 5 years since AP chem. I FEEL OLD NOW. (Doesn't help that the National Merit Scholarship Program sent me a little form letter saying that they thought I might be graduating this quarter so would I mind filling out a few questions? NO. I'M NOT GRADUATING. THIS IS BECAUSE I AM A DUMBASS WHO CAN'T HACK IT AT STANFORD. Anything else?)
Sigh. I just want to be learning again. The girl at Starbucks asked me the other day if I was taking Biology. I just said yes. I figured the truth was too complicated.

good lazy sunday music: the verve remixed series from itunes. i just downloaded volume 3 and am highly impressed. it's great classic jazz vocalists, remixed by the most talented turntablists around. it's great.
t minus 4 days and counting until the neodandi show. i'm getting progressively more and more stoked. also i am looking forward to it being over so i have my evenings back. but the show is thursday... please come!! you know you wanna. plus, there's an after-hours party at a studio in pioneer square. it's gonna be awesome. friday is SO going to be a sick day.
meh. i learned myself about chemical evolution this past week. i'm reading a bio textbook for the hell of it. now i'm learning about cell structure and the function of various parts of the cell. mostly a review so it's not hard, but there's a lot that i've forgotten that i'd like to remember before jumping headfirst into the bio core.
other cool things from this weekend: pies and pints on 65th. ran around green lake (2.8 miles). go me. we're talking about training for a 5k later this summer. also, cooked dinner with jared tonight. god knows we're terrible about actually doing that. we're trying to get better.

alabama is so backwards. a catholic high school banned a girl from walking at graduation, because she was pregnant. so she walked up to the stage, announced her own name, and walked across. then the cops escorted her mother and aunt out of the church.
oh, and the father of her baby? sure, he was allowed to graduate, no problem.

Dear Tyra,
Two years ago, you brought forth to our television wasteland the best reality TV show ever created. With a limited casting budget (and indeed a limited production budget) you managed to find a cast of gorgeous, thoughtful, witty, independent women, who only grew more interesting (for better or worse) as the show went on. Every one of them had personality, with the possible exception of Gisele, and we enjoyed watching them argue, pray, suffer, freeze, strut and pose.
With each successive season, the casting budget and audience has grown. Now you have national casting calls, television advertisements, and a much bigger group of girls sending in video tapes and photos. The thing that astounds me is the fact that, with this ever-widening pool to choose from, the cast each season gets markedly worse. Granted, you found a Cover Girl in Eva. She is a dynamic personality that we love to see on TV. We rooted for her from day 1, and she hasn't disappointed. But this season, there was no one with such a dynamic personality - we had boredom, shyness, and arrogance, but not charisma. And there was no mystery about who would win - following the opinion polls from week to week, Naima was a clear front-runner, no matter how much the judges seemed to hate her personality. And so, while watching the finale, when I found myself wondering, "What if Naima DOESN'T win?" I knew that this show had hit rock bottom. Reality TV is not supposed to be predictable and safe. Naima has the personality of a rock. Sure, she's got a mohawk, and I respect that, but honestly, I thought the entire cast of this season sucked ass. Oh, and when you stuck them in front of a teleprompter? That's when I knew this season sucked ass. Not one of them could read! Not one!
So, seriously, Tyra, you need to re-examine your entire casting process. Fire the casting director. Go with the method you used to cast Season 1. Somehow, even though there were only a few thousand applicants, you managed to find a stellar group of people. How is it that with a larger pool to select from, the quality of applicants has gone down the toilet?
Anyway, that's my rant. Tyra, you're disappointing me. Oh, and if you want me for the 6th season, you know where to contact me.

well folks, it's getting to be that time... the neodandi fashion show performance is next thursday, may 26. i have tickets, so contact me if you want to come. (if you're reading this and you're in seattle, i want to see you there! please?) The tickets are $15 - and if that seems expensive keep in mind that this is at trinity, which is a bit on the posh side, and cover is usually $10 or so. you know you want to come. i have 20 tickets on hand, but i can get more if more people want to come.
i also heard from the designer today that vogue magazine is sending someone out. there are also going to be scads of local newspapers and magazines. it is going to be huge... you know you wanna be there.

so the pentagon is getting ready to close a bunch of bases. in the name of saving money. by doing this, they estimate they will save 5 billion dollars this year. well, here is my radical plan for saving more than 5 billion dollars this year - in fact, we could save up to 80 billion dollars right off the bat. it's a simple plan, not too difficult to carry out, and it'd make a huge difference in our government's budget. the radical plan?

i've been exploring a lot of productivity helpers recently, to find a method that helps me to get stuff done. i'm not completely sold on getting things done, but it's a start... i'm also exploring backpack, which seems like a neat idea. it syncs with iCal format stuff, too, so i'm thinking about starting to use ical more, especially since you can isync ical with the ipod. i haven't tried the hipster pda really, but it's an idea that i'm toying around with as well. i bought a purse-sized notebook, and it's really handy, but the fact that all the pages are bound together doesn't help with organization.
i guess my main goal for this organizational kick, at work, is to get this job organized and simplified so that when i leave, whoever takes over for me has somewhere to start. god knows they just threw me into the middle of it, and i've had to make sense of it, but i think i'm doing that pretty well, given the circumstances. it's mostly because training the floater has made me realize just what a pain in the ass it is to train someone on a job, and that you'd better be at least a little organized.
and now, for your viewing pleasure: the slacker manifesto. why slackers make the best employees. :D
on another note, izze is the best drink evar.

friday night we went to the neptune to see the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. this movie has been so fucking long in the making it's ridiculous. i remember in 9th grade, a bunch of us including jeff hillary made a promise to all see the movie together, wherever we were and whenever it was. sorry jeff... i didn't make it back. i'm sure you understand. and you still have my fucking stephen hawking book, you bastard, so we're even, really. anyway, as i predicted to tessa as we were walking out of the theater, i have the dolphin's chorus stuck in my head. "so long, so long, so long, so long, so long, so long and thaaaaaaaanks - for all the fish." it was a cute number, and a cute movie as well. there really is too much material in those books to pack into one movie, so that considered, i think they did a good job fitting in all the best jokes and making them make as much sense as possible (very little, really, but that's as douglas adams intended i am sure) in under two hours.

another good weekend. friday night we hung out with tessa, and went to the apple store for the tiger release party. it was crowded. and it turns out you can't get the student discount on software in the store, so we didn't buy it there. i ordered it online last week, anyway, and it should be here by friday. Hooray for tiger! i'm such a mac cultie now, it's scary.
This is the crowd in front of the apple store, circa 7pm. Crazy.
anyway, after we left the insanely crowded apple store, we met up with brian and went to chutney's for dinner. chutney's is in wallingford, in the wallingford center shopping center on the corner of 45th and Wallingford.* it is quite possibly almost definitely the best indian food i have ever tasted. plus they have a killer mango margarita. mmm coconut and farmer's cheese curry. :) and it was rad hanging out with tessa - whenever brian and jared started talking about code or servers or networking tessa and i would start talking about shoes. i've needed another female for quite some time.
yesterday was fun as well - we hopped the bus downtown, so jared could buy new shoes at the new balance store. they look like pretty cool shoes, and they're like, real running shoes, too, so they support your foot for walking really well. i'm thinking about going back there next month after i get paid again and buying myself a pair (they make them for women too, and they come in all sorts of awesome colors). i have a rack full of stupid shoes, i need to get me a pair of smart shoes.
Speaking of stupid shoes, I bought a pair of purple ribboned espadrilles at shoes.com. They should be here soon - they shipped on Friday. I'm stoked, they are so cute.
in other news, getting into the class i want this summer is going to be a little iffy. i have to wait for them to mail me my registration info, and then I have to wait until "registration period 3" which i am not sure what that means, because during registration periods one and two, non matriculated students (which would include me, since I havenn't been accepted yet) are not allowed to sign up for the class. i'm really starting to stress about my admissions - when I applied I indicated that i wanted a much more selective major, and often they are less inclined to admit students that might not get into their major. but if i don't get in, i guess i'll just turn around and apply for winter quarter admissions. i'll be like rudy - they have to admit me at some point, right?
we also stopped at american apparel again yesterday. i need to stop going there, because i could really buy the whole goddamn store. (well, except for the shirts in yellow and orange. i can't wear those colors.) I bought a purple and a pink tee, and a blue jersey scarf, and a sustainable edition boybeater. the sustainable edition one is made from 100% certified organically grown cotton. i think that's rad.
i think it's time for us to procure breakfast. jared's been up since 8:30 and still hasn't eaten anything.
* i just used the word "wallingford" three times in a sentence. i miss living there, and every time i go back it's like i'm back home. maybe someday i'll get to move back there - the houses in that neighborhood are nice, and if i ever could afford one that would be sweet.

i just ate roughly 1/6 of the chocolate bar i bought with dinner at the metropolitan market. that is all that i am allowed to eat, since that chocolate bar was not only espresso flavor, but filled with crunchy espresso bean chunks. that chocolate was yummy, but i think it's better breakfast chocolate than after-dinner chocolate. how's that for a great idea - an espresso flavored chocolate bar for breakfast. mmmmm.
so i might be going back to school in june, which is pretty cool. that is, if my boss assents to me taking 2-hour lunches and not working thursday mornings. and if i can get into the class i want. i want to take the first quarter biology class, just to get it out of the way. it doesn't really sound tough, but if I take it in the summer, there's fewer people, so there's less competition to get into the class (which'll make it easier to get it on subsequent quarters as well). it'll be fun. i've been reading about organic chemistry, too, about covalent bonds and hybrid orbitals and Lewis structures. Ah, memories. So when I take O-chem, the first week won't be in a foreign language. After that, all bets are off.
and now, for your listening pleasure: science genius girl, by freezepop! (This song was originally written about me. just kidding. but it's dorky like me.) when i'm in the right mood, freezepop is the best thing in the world. first off, there's plastic stars, the first freezepop song i ever heard, and the second song that Jared ever sent me, right after the postal service's Such Great Heights, so it's an our song, as well. Then there's Science Genius Girl. "I'm the science genius girl/ i won the science fair." You might not know this about me, but I won my school's science fair, went to the regional and state science fairs two years running, and got an honorable mention the second time. that's pretty damn good when you're from TEXAS. So that song speaks to me. Then there's Tenisu No Boifurendo - it's all in japanese. about how you play good tennis, do you want to play tennis with me, i want to be with you. it's adorable. And then there are all of their other songs. Freezepop just plain rocks.

man, talk about a quarter-life crisis. last night, after watching a fascinating episode of the eyes of nye, bill nye (the science guy)'s new show, it dawned on me that what i've been planning on doing with my life is all wrong.
the episode focused on stem-cell research and therapeutic cloning, a subject that i find infinitely fascinating. so it dawned on me, if i'm so into stem cell research, why the hell am i trying to be an art major? i'm not artistic. i'm not even remotely creative. i have an extremely scientific mind, one that has always grasped cellular and biochem processes ridiculously easily. anytime i see anything talking about women in science, and the challenges they face, i feel inherently guilty for not pursuing that path. the only reason i'd never considered a biology major before was because i was afraid of pre-meds. and i've come to the conclusion: fuck the pre-meds. they should be scared of me, not the other way around. i'll ruin their curve. bwahaha.
so, i'm thinking that i'm going to major in biology, with a concentration on molecular, cellular and developmental bio. i've been reading course descriptions and major requirements, and nothing looks too scary, or too hard. i can do this... it's what makes sense to me. and then, i'll do mad research, and get a killer position with a biotech firm, and make bank. and then i'll buy all that awesome furniture i wanted in the first place.

the kitties, about half an hour ago. it is an absolutely gorgeous day here - 70 degrees and sunny. it's really starting to sink in that winter is gone, and it's going to be warm for awhile. my plan of action for surviving the summer? american apparel skirts and a great pair of espadrilles. i'm still searching for the espadrilles - i haven't seen anything i like in my price range yet. but the quest will continue until i am espadrilled.
more kitties. sorry they're blurry, but i couldn't get another shot at this one, since the kitties dispersed shortly thereafter.

so today i had a fitting for the neodandi show, down under the viaduct in pioneer square, at lunchtime. so i kinda got sidetracked and wandered a bit, and snapped a few shots. i'm slowly getting the hang of this, at least enough to wish i had a nicer camera. someday.
shooting from the hip. plus, my screen suxors during the day, you can't see it for shit.
i've noticed that i tend to take pictures of everything, rather than of something. i need to work on this.

So yesterday was Free Scoop Day at Ben and Jerry's. This is an annual event equivalent to the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca - the Ice Cream Hajj. OK, so not QUITE as important, but close. Anyway, I got there somewhere around 7 and the line was already to the Ann Taylor store.
It took almost an hour for me to get my free ice cream, but it was well worth it. My iPod had enough juice to keep me rockin' out the whole time (yes, even being that weird girl who dances to her headphones at times), which enabled me to tune out the vapid conversations happening around me and absorb myself in people-watching. Jamie, if you're reading this, I saw your fucking clone there - from 4 years ago. This girl looked EXACTLY like an 18 year old Jamie, complete with big backpack, bike helmet, and stainless steel commuter's mug. She was even Jamie's height and looked like she might even be Lebanese. It was kind of creepy, but it made me all nostalgic.
I didn't take a picture of the ice cream I finally got for free, but I got a sugar cone of triple caramel chunk, which is an absolutely awesome flavor. Yum.

It's hard to believe it's already april. the cherry blossoms are almost gone because it's been rainy and windy for the last week, but today it's bright and sunny. for some unknown reason, my body decided to wake up at 9:30 (oh wait, that was Jared, who started jabbering at the kitties) and I gave up on falling back asleep. i walked up to the honey bear bakery (which is inside the Third Place books on 20th and 65th in Ravenna) for breakfast for Jared and I and obtained a pair of these delicious cinnamon rolls with cream cheese and raspberries on top. Delectable. On the way home I took a shortcut through Ravenna Park, which is absolutely beautiful right after it rains. I don't know why it didn't occur to me to take my camera out and snap a picture. Next time. I need to work on this photography habit.
After that wonderful breakfast, Jared and I took the bus up to the Ave and visited american apparel. this store seriously kicks ass. they have just about any article of clothing imaginable, in a really soft cotton knit, in seventeen different colors. pink, yellow, red, lavendar, teal, turquoise, blue, black, brown, gray. t-shirts, long-sleeve tees, tanks, skirts, exercise clothes, legwarmers, scarves. it's like this great big house of basics, that you can layer on to be bright and cheerful. and it's all 100% sweatshop free, made in downtown LA. the workers all get full benefits and the best wages in the industry. they even have an organic cotton line and are working on integrating the organic line into the rest of their clothes. it's so fuckin socially conscious, it's great. so i am comfy and guilt free! plus their shirts just look hot on me.
i'm hungry.

The following is a communique from a group calling themselves Unitarian Jihad. I found it here and I felt the need to reprint it in this space. Beware! Unitarian Jihad is upon us.
"Greetings to the Imprisoned Citizens of the United States. We are Unitarian Jihad. There is only God, unless there is more than one God. The vote of our God subcommittee is 10-8 in favor of one God, with two abstentions. Brother Flaming Sword of Moderation noted the possibility of there being no God at all, and his objection was noted with love by the secretary.
"Greetings to the Imprisoned Citizens of the United States! Too long has your attention been waylaid by the bright baubles of extremist thought. Too long have fundamentalist yahoos of all religions (except Buddhism -- 14-5 vote, no abstentions, fundamentalism subcommittee) made your head hurt. Too long have you been buffeted by angry people who think that God talks to them. You have a right to your moderation! You have the power to be calm! We will use the IED of truth to explode the SUV of dogmatic expression!
"People of the United States, why is everyone yelling at you??? Whatever happened to ... you know, everything? Why is the news dominated by nutballs saying that the Ten Commandments have to be tattooed inside the eyelids of every American, or that Allah has told them to kill Americans in order to rid the world of Satan, or that Yahweh has instructed them to go live wherever they feel like, or that Shiva thinks bombing mosques is a great idea? Sister Immaculate Dagger of Peace notes for the record that we mean no disrespect to Jews, Muslims, Christians or Hindus. Referred back to the committee of the whole for further discussion.
"We are Unitarian Jihad. We are everywhere. We have not been born again, nor have we sworn a blood oath. We do not think that God cares what we read, what we eat or whom we sleep with. Brother Neutron Bomb of Serenity notes for the record that he does not have a moral code but is nevertheless a good person, and Unexalted Leader Garrote of Forgiveness stipulates that Brother Neutron Bomb of Serenity is a good person, and this is to be reflected in the minutes.
"Beware! Unless you people shut up and begin acting like grown-ups with brains enough to understand the difference between political belief and personal faith, the Unitarian Jihad will begin a series of terrorist-like actions. We will take over television studios, kidnap so-called commentators and broadcast calm, well-reasoned discussions of the issues of the day. We will not try for "balance" by hiring fruitcakes; we will try for balance by hiring non-ideologues who have carefully thought through the issues.
"We are Unitarian Jihad. We will appear in public places and require people to shake hands with each other. (Sister Hand Grenade of Love suggested that we institute a terror regime of mandatory hugging, but her motion was not formally introduced because of lack of a quorum.) We will require all lobbyists, spokesmen and campaign managers to dress like trout in public. Televangelists will be forced to take jobs as Xerox repair specialists. Demagogues of all stripes will be required to read Proust out loud in prisons.
"We are Unitarian Jihad, and our motto is: "Sincerity is not enough." We have heard from enough sincere people to last a lifetime already. Just because you believe it's true doesn't make it true. Just because your motives are pure doesn't mean you are not doing harm. Get a dog, or comfort someone in a nursing home, or just feed the birds in the park. Play basketball. Lighten up. The world is not out to get you, except in the sense that the world is out to get everyone.
"Brother Gatling Gun of Patience notes that he's pretty sure the world is out to get him because everyone laughs when he says he is a Unitarian. There were murmurs of assent around the room, and someone suggested that we buy some Congress members and really stick it to the Baptists. But this was deemed against Revolutionary Principles, and Brother Gatling Gun of Patience was remanded to the Sunday Flowers and Banners committee.
"People of the United States! We are Unitarian Jihad! We can strike without warning. Pockets of reasonableness and harmony will appear as if from nowhere! Nice people will run the government again! There will be coffee and cookies in the Gandhi Room after the revolution."
Sweet.

i think i'm trying to be artistic with some of these. this is fun, this concept of making images with an electronic box. perhaps i could like this.
frida and a door.
maxwell and a bathtub.
agent scully the second. or, something else, if you can come up with a better name.
i'm going to start carrying my camera around with me in my purse, so expect more photos. in fact, i should post a picture of my purse, because it is rad. i'll do that later.

this one via metafilter: Takashi Murakami. He's being called the Japanese Andy Warhol. He produces awesome artistic images with a uniquely modern japanese aesthetic
but he also markets the hell out of himself and makes hella bank.
Also, he's the guy who redesigned the Louis Vuitton logo we've all come to know and hate over the last 10 years:
He's inspired more than his share of criticism from the art world - but what truly revolutionary artist doesn't?
Anyway, check out the MeFi links for more reading on Murakami. He's good stuff.

I think it's probably because I just saw the movie Saved! this weekend, which is an awesome movie, yes, but it's seeped into my psyche. And this is a Bad Thing. I had my first-ever Pregnancy Dream last night. GAAAAH! And... to make matters even more frightening, I was actually HAPPY to be pregnant in my dream. I AM NOT READY FOR THIS. So It's been bugging me all day. Gah. No babies.

ahh, saint paddy's day, when the streets are filled with green-clad drunks and people actually order corned beef and cabbage for dinner. never mind the fact that corned beef and cabbage is hardly a traditional march 17th feast. irish people didn't really even eat much beef until the last hundred years or so. just a random bit of trivia.
erin go bragh.
also, check out neodandi. it's just a splash page for now, but more content should be up within a week. that's the studio whose show i'm doing in may. you're all coming, right?

ahh, friday. finally. edward, if you are going to lay there on my chest you would do well to move your tail off of the keyboard so i don't poke it while i'm typing. and stop pawing my face.
i have a silly kitty. he loves nothing more than to paw my face and smell my mouth. somehow i get the feeling that most people don't let their kitties do this.
anyway, it is friday. and edward is now trying to remove my hoop earrings with his front paw. brilliant.
speaking of brilliant, i've been doing a little more planning on this idea of going to london in september. air canada, it looks like, can get us there for about $650 round trip. british air is about 50 bucks more, but it's nonstop, and you get free booze. i'm leaning toward BA. hostels start at around 10 quid a night (i'm already starting to think like a londoner) but easyhotel is only 5 quid if you book well in advance. i'm hoping to score a reservation there, because that would bring lodging costs down to like, 50 or 60 pounds. which is what you'd pay a night at a nicer hotel. i'm pondering whether to include a chunnel trip to paris for two nights would be worth it - or just spend alll two weeks in london? i'm leaning towards going, just to say i've been there. and to do the eiffel tower. i admit it, i'm a damn tourist.
so with transportation and lodging, we're somewhere in the 1000 dollar range. which is what i was planning, and i think is the cheapest it can be done for, but it means it's going to take some lobbying to get jared to agree to come.
i have a kitty bathing himself between me and my computer. it kind of surprises me how much edward has warmed up to me. i thought it'd never happen.
i need to start going to yoga again. i can afford it now.

so yesterday we went down to the village and spent a bunch of money. i got a really hot green top and a bomb-ass pair of sunglasses at lucky, and jared got some pants. then i bought a bunch of hair product at bartells. this is because i need extreme conditioning shampoo and conditioner due to the fact that my hair is now very, very blonde. (i would post pictures, but i am at this moment at work, and also lazy.) i need to stop spending money, but really, i love having stuff. after work today i have a meeting with a potential client - that fashion show that i mentioned the other day. hopefully this will go well and they will love me - and want to pay me.
marcellus wallace, my black moor goldfish, died too. orange-fish seems like he might pull through though. this means i get to buy new goldfish though, hooray! (I should wait until everyone is healthy and do several water changes before getting new fish though.)
Bleurgh.

so this is shaping up to be a hellacious week. nonstop action from here to next monday, i kid you not. today was my only day off (well, relatively speaking) until after the weekend. and, i'm getting a cold. joy oh fucking joy.
tuesday, tomorrow, i am going to get my hair done. this is a big step for me since i haven't seen a professional stylist since i was a senior in high school. isn't that weird? anyway i have decided that i am sick of being a brunette (stupid seattle, not bleaching out my hair the way it should be) and am going blonde. with a capital B. plus i am going to get layers put in. Expect pictures, unless i hate myself and want to die afterwards. But this probably means that I'm going to have to persuade Lance to take a new headshot, since my hair will be radically different than it is now, and a headshot should look like you look, surprises at interviews are bad. with any luck, though, i will be walking out of there looking something like this.
Wednesday is the season premiere of America's Next Top Model! which basically consists of me sitting on my ass, watching this show and thinking (and talking to anyone who will listen) about how I would be way better at it than anyone else on the show. For the record, I submitted my application for season 5 a few weeks ago, complete with bad-ass photos by Lance and an even badder-ass video by mike (my old roommate). Who will go on to become America's Next Top Model? Tune in to find out. (My money is on Naima, but that means that she will come in third, like my favorite each season so far (Elyse, Shandi, Amanda)).
So, after Top Model Wednesday comes Top Model Thursday, on which date I have an interview with a "couture design studio" in Pioneer Square for a fashion show in May. Talk about being on top of their game. The last fashion show I did was thrown together at the last minute... with a walk-through twice about an hour before the show started. This one has rehearsals - twice a week - for the month leading up to the show. Plus fittings and all that fun stuff. I hope I get paid for this one, that'd be fuckin' sweet. But I will be absolutely positive to get good pictures and maybe even video this time, so that I have it for my portfolio (still haven't tracked down any photos from the last one, dammit).
And then, after Thursday, comes Friday. Friday the outlaws (they're not my inlaws, so they must be outlaws) are coming... and staying the weekend (in a hotel, not our apartment, thank christ). I am refraining from commenting on this matter in this forum. Needless to say it will be an interesting weekend.
In other news... my transcripts arrived at the UW office of admissions on time, which makes me very happy - wouldn't it suck to not get in just because a transcript didn't get there? They also got my financial aid app, but I have to amend that due to a straggling W-2 that I had forgotten about... My favorite goldfish, Agent Scully, kicked the bucket this week due most likely to my own stupid neglect, and two of my other fish are sick and undergoing anti-fungal treatment... the cats went fucking crazy this morning around 5am waking us both up and causing us to talk about giving Maxwell away (not seriously, but almost) - and then we saw on the news that there were 3 4.5ish earthquakes off the southern tip of Vancouver Island this morning at 5am, so it makes perfect sense that the kitties were flipping...

recently i've noticed i check my blog way more often than i post to it. it's like i expect someone else to be doing it for me. ha. nope. i'm the only one who can do it... anyway, it's been a crazy few days... i went to an open call on wednesday and landed a role in a local fashion show which is tonight and i am kind of like, what? what's going on? i guess it'll all make sense after tonight, 'cause it's like, my chance to find out if this is something i really wanna do, or if it's not. i'm pretty much convinced that it is... what the fuck else am i going to be doing for the months between now and when i go back to school anyway? honestly i am just so fucking bored in my job... i feel like my soul is being sucked from me. it has nothing to do with who i am, who i want to be, or what i want to do with my life... it's just what puts the house over my head and the food in my stomach. i'd go crazy if i hadn't discovered fashion. maybe it's just a distraction from what's really important, but what IS really important? honestly? right now at this point in my life what is important is that i'm having fun, and that i'm safe while i'm doing it.
maybe i really am a capricorn after all. i'm a dreamer, but when i do dream, i dream fucking huge. you don't have to have absolute direction as to what you want to do with every single day you have left on this planet... you just have to focus on the things that are making you happy, and pursue them. life, liberty, and the pursuit of fuckin' happiness!
or something. i don't really even know anymore.

I've decided that I'm going to London this late summer/early fall. I've found a few great deals on round trip tickets (the lowest I've seen is $480 round trip) and I am hoping to stay here. That is, if I can get a reservation. easyHotel sounds like the absolute best thing in the world - check out the link. Rooms in central London from 5 pounds (don't know how to make the squiggly L thingy) a night. How fucking sweet is that??? I know the exchange rate is hardly favorable right now, but from what I can tell that means that tourism in Europe is hitting hard times, so they're making stuff cheaper.
So I'm looking at the end of August or beginning of September, and hopefully will be staying 10 days to 2 weeks. This whole trip is going to be done on the super-cheap, I'm going to just use the Tube to get places and do as much free stuff as I possibly can while avoiding the tourist traps. I am hoping to keep the whole trip under a grand. One thing I am definitely hoping to do that isn't cheap, however, is take the eurostar through the chunnel to Paris for maybe a night or two. Probably just one. But the Eurostar is only $60 one-way for "youth" (which is anyone under 26) so that's really not TOO much money. Anyway, if anyone wants to go with, let me know. I'd love to have a companion or two.

It seems like almost every day I come up with something else that I think I might like to do with the rest of my life. This is problematic because I need to pick one and stick with it, goddammit. Yesterday I thought about becoming a veterinarian. I mean, I love kitties, and I'm good at biology... but that's like 6 years of schooling. Today my idea is to be a handbag designer. this is a little more reasonable, given my recent obsession with fashion combined with my always obsession with design.
I came up with at least six concepts for handbags while waiting for my tea to boil.

U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote:
Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror
by Peter Grose, Special to the New York Times -- Sept. 4, 1967
WASHINGTON, Sept. 3-- United States officials were surprised and heartened today at the size of turnout in South Vietnam's presidential election despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting.
According to reports from Saigon, 83 per cent of the 5.85 million registered voters cast their ballots yesterday. Many of them risked reprisals threatened by the Vietcong.
The size of the popular vote and the inability of the Vietcong to destroy the election machinery were the two salient facts in a preliminary assessment of the nation election based on the incomplete returns reaching here.
A successful election has long been seen as the keystone in President Johnson's policy of encouraging the growth of constitutional processes in South Vietnam.
The purpose of the voting was to give legitimacy to the Saigon Government.

so i got unzipped from netflix last night, oh my god. what an amazing movie. it's a documentary about isaac mizrahi putting together his 1994 fall/winter collection, so it's basically an hour of him, in all his fabulousness, and then about 15 minutes of runway action. both of these are incredible. isaac mizrahi is infinitely watchable, he's such a crazy genius it's ridiculous. plus, there's plenty of naomi campbell in all her 1994 glory - i'm not such a fan of people like her, cindy, linda, etc now - but in their heyday they were INCREDIBLE. there is a reason that she became a supermodel. i watched the runway part twice in a row, just to soak in naomi strutting it. she was in-fucking-credible.
and the whole time, all i could think was "jesus, i want to do that."

three day weekend down the drain. oh well, i got a lot done. hung out with people, got a lot of my shit moved, did a lot of stuff around the house. our apartment is starting to come together. we got a new catbox the other night because our old one was one-kitty size, and so if you left it for two days without cleaning it got scary. our new one is huge though, so it's all good. it has a door though to the consternation of frida, so it's funny to watch her try to get in. she does make it eventually.
yoga tonight was a bitch. it was hotter than usual, which meant i started sweating during the first breathing exercise, before i even started working out, and by the time the class was over i'd completely soaked two towels. it is unusual that it's this hot. but due to the heat, and the fact that i didn't eat much protein today, it was a really hard class. i had to lay down a few times and rest, i usually don't have to do that so it was sort of frustrating. oh well, i made it through alive. and the endorphins are great.
in other news, it's martin luther king day. bush gave an address honoring dr. king. yeah, you're really fucking carrying on his legend, you dumbfuck. all evidence taken from his behavior and remarks during his life suggest that he'd be fighting for gay marriage today, not against it like one of his daughters had the audacity to suggest. gah. fucking fundies.
also, vaguely related: watch harold and kumar go to white castle. beyond being a fucking funny stoner movie, it's also a very intelligent critique on our perceptions of race in america. i personally am on the edge of my seat waiting for the sequel, harold and kumar go to amsterdam.

so it's my birthday. wheeeee.
we spent the day hitting the slopes. this season has been woefully lacking in snow, but crystal had 7" of powder overnight and then proceeded to dump another 3" or so on us while we were there, so the powder was amazing. just had to watch out for those places where rocks and trees come through the snow. plus i got to try out my new boots and bindings - man, they make such a difference over the old stuff. i'm hoping to have enough cash to buy a new deck at the end of the season (clearance time!) so then I'd have all new gear, and all gear i bought for myself instead of having it bought for me without my knowledge and thus not really fitting me right.
i just found out that jamie might be coming to visit in february. she got an interview with UW's neuro grad program, which is one of the best in the nation, so she's coming up for that. i really, really hope she gets in and decides to go there - having her close by again would be awesome.
all in all, not a bad birthday. i'm just old now.

i got a new phone today. it's an lg flip phone. i like it waaaaay better than my little nokia candy bar - the keys on that phone always pissed me off. but this new one is far better, and best of all it was free. woohoo!
in other news, i'm a spoiled bitch who takes way too much for granted. i'm sitting here with a powerbook and a new phone, in a heated apartment with furniture and clean water and cable tv and wireless fucking internet, and yet on the other side of the planet, they are still finding dead bodies by the thousands and so many people have lost so much. i had this idea, where the peace corps should have a massive temporary membership drive, and organize volunteers to spend two weeks in asia helping out. i would go. i think a lot of people would.

Well, geez. It's the last day of 2004. So it's been almost a year since I moved here now - but it feels like I've lived here all along. I love it and wouldn't go back for the world.
Anyway, being New Year's Eve, I had the day off. Jared didn't. This means it was a KAT DAY. I love this kind of day. the kind where I wake up at 10 and crawl out of bed at 10:30, then make myself look hot and catch a bus downtown to spend waaaaay too much money on new clothes at Nordstrom. I shopped in that department where the sales people call you by your first name, and the dressing rooms are like small lounges rather than bathroom stalls. And I bought a new pair of jeans and a really awesome shirt. I'm not talking about how much I spent though. ;)
So after I left Nordstrom I was walking past Westlake Center when I remembered, "Hey, the monorail is open again!" So I went up to the top floor of the mall... just to see how much it cost to ride to Seattle Center - and when it was only a buck fifty i jumped on that silly little relic from the 1962 World's Fair and rode north in nostalgia. And then I saw the Space Needle.
Some background here: I haven't been up the space needle in more than a decade, so it was time. But, my boyfriend is afraid of heights, so it's one of those things he doesn't really want to do together. So I decided, to hell with the fact that it's 13 bucks, i'm going to see the view from 520 feet up. So I did. You really can see so much from up there - the view over the sound is absolutely amazing. And there's a fucking Starbucks at top. (Duh.)
Anyway, that was pretty cool. I felt like a tourist, but oh well. It was me day, so I did what I wanted. :D

yargh, another week down. another week closer to the end of the year, and the end of the world. Not that I'm saying these two events will be concurrent or anything, I'm just saying is all.
Finally got around to closing that credit union account I've been meaning to drain for the last, oh, five years or so, so I should have a check for almost $500 coming my way soon. Big money. Oh well, it'll go to some of my debts and other such crap. Fucking money. Also, that raise that my boss has been promising me since August will finally be in effect as of the 20th. Thanks. That really helps for all these 5 months I've been paying rent on a place that's just too damn expensive when you're making less than $10 an hour in take-home pay. So, assuming all goes well, and Mike's friend decides to move into my room, I'm all set to move in with Jared in January. this will mean a drop from $468 to $337 in rent - count all $131 of those new dollars I'll have now - coupled with my buck-oh-eight raise, should mean things will be slightly easier than they have been. Not to mention all the hours and gallons of petroleum saved in commuting to and from Tacoma to spend time with my boyfriend. And that fucking apartment down there, with its fucking mold that fucking gave me asthma, will finally be out of my life by the end of the year, once Brian leaves. And the new place doesn't have carpet, which I'm glad about because carpet is bad for asthma and it's easier to keep dander and dust down with hardwood, but it is so fucking noisy when his cats decide to race down the length of the apartment at breakneck speed at all fucking hours of the night. obnoxious kitties.
Hardly got anything done at work this afternoon, I had friday-brain so bad. this is a common but untreatable condition in which your brain is already off for the weekend, but your body isn't. I cope with repetetive tasks and music, but it often degrades into shameless free-cell playing and much spacing-out. Blah. I have such a mind-numbing job. But hey, big-bossman dropped in unexpectedly this week (he is based in southern california, so my desk isn't on his daily tour). I accidentally let leak a few key remarks on my salary and he, not previously knowing my monetary situation, was much dismayed. Perhaps this will result in the pulling of a few strings and the raising of my pay, once more. I would be stoked about that.
Tonight: dinner, maybe Tacoma, nothing exciting. Jared has a box waiting for him at his old place from Kenneth Cole - and he didn't order anything. I am just dying to know what's inside. That boy has ALL THE FUCKING LUCK with entering contests and forgetting about them. I should keep him around - maybe we'll get a few vacations or a car or something. He idly wondered at one point whether it was about Kenneth Cole's model contest they had a few months back - but he never submitted a picture or anything for that, and no one picks a model without seeng a fucking picture, so I'm sure that's not it. If that boy got a major ad campaign for a totally respectable label I would be very jealous for awhile, and then I'd deal with it.
Wow, I'm rambling.

yeah, so thanksgiving weekend was about a wash. thursday was pretty cool. dinner was at jared's uncle's place... which is a converted elementary school, now inhabited by somewhere around 15 artists. plus there's studios that aren't live-in. it's a really cool atmosphere. but thanksgiving was a communal dinner, where everyone brought a few dishes and somehow there managed to be enough food to feed around 40 mouths. it was fun. i like hanging out with lance and traycee.
but then friday night kind of sucked. after i went to bed, my breathing just got worse and worse, and i kept sucking down my albuterol but nothing changed. so, being the panicky panic-stricken panic monster that is a person who can't breathe, i made jared drive me to the emergency room. where, upon checking in, i waited around an hour and a half (all the while my breathing getting better) to get called back, 45 minutes (much better now) to see a doctor, 15 minutes getting an EKG, 45 minutes waiting for the doctor to come back and give me a breathing treatment, you get the picture. i was almost fine by the time i got the fucking breathing treatment, it was kind of like, why the fuck am i here? but i was there, and what else could i have done when my albuterol wasn't working? man, i really hope my insurance company doesn't dick me over on that and charge me a $50 copay plus god knows how much for an ekg plus the cost of a chest x-ray plus the breathing treatment plus the "free" peak flow inhaler that i forgot at the hospital. that would really suck.
not having money blows. but (but!) i ordered satin opera-length gloves, so when they get here I can do my photo shoot with Lance! and then i can go get an interview with these people! and then i can do photo shoots and make hella bank and not worry about money any more. that would (will!) be nice.

welcome to seattle.
so because jared's car is working again we drove to work this morning, which meant i got in an hour earlier than normal, which meant that i was able to slip out at 10 til 4 (i skipped 10 minutes of work, bad me). that, in turn, meant that i got to see daylight after work for the first time in several days, and probably the last time for quite a while. this whole darkness thing is taking some adjustment, trust me. it's not that it's affecting my mood - i'm actually getting steadily better despite the decrease in sunlight - it's just an odd sensation to step out of the building at 4:45 and have the streetlights be on and the sky a deep purple color. i have to say, though, that the evenings right now are gorgeous. today it cleared up after raining this morning, so the world was still wet but the sky was vibrantly pink and orange and blue. it's different than the winters i'm used to, but i think i'll do just fine.
anyway, that's just one of many reasons i love living in seattle. here is a quick list of some others.
- the fact that every single kerry-edwards sign and bumper sticker is still proudly displayed. george w. bush isn't our president here.
- live music. dj music. music in alcohol establishments every fucking night of the week. goodbye, boredom.
- public transit. sure, the people on it smell funny sometimes, but the bus has never failed to get me where i want to go.
- water. i love seeing the sound every day when i'm walking around downtown. i love smelling ocean some mornings. i love shilshole beach.
- the people. they're great for watching. though i suppose the same could be said for anywhere, seattlites have their oddities. playing spot-the-transplant (the ones from LA are the ones holding umbrellas when it's barely raining) is a favorite pasttime of mine.
- my neighborhood. it's the perfect mix of safe and exciting, most of the bums stay west of here, and the neighborhood to the south is somewhere i'd imagine raising kids, yet i'm within walking distance of several restaurants, more than enough bars (one of them is even gay) and the grocery store.
anyway, this city sufficiently rocks. i want it to be my home for ever and ever unless i decide to move to canada. but really, i don't like hockey, and i pronounce it "ah-BOWT" not "a-boot".

You know what's awesome? Warning lights on a dashboard that ACTUALLY PORTEND THE FUTURE. I have never encountered this before, ever, but it happened today. We were around Fife on our way back up to Seattle after spending my day off in Tacoma, and Jared's battery warning light comes on. He starts obsessing. What if my alternator dies? What if we break down? What if my car dies? I can't have that happen! Waaaah! and on and on. And I'm all, warning lights don't tell the truth, silly! Because mine don't. But then, 30 miles later, he's like, hey, my dashboard lights are getting dimmer. Fuck! And then, just as we crest the hill on the I-5 shipping channel bridge, like within sight of my exit, the car starts growling and making BAAAAD noises. And continues to do so all the way down the bridge, onto the exit and to the stoplite. And then we stop. And then the car stops. FUCK. And it won't turn back on. FUCK FUCK.
So we yell for a few minutes, attract the interest of a bum-lady (who proceeds to tell us what to do) and try to push it. No dice. All the while, people are pulling up behind us and wondering why we're not going. It's amazing how long someone will sit behind a car WITH ITS FUCKING BLINKERS ON and wait for it to go. And wait. And wait.
And then this car pulls up next to us and starts yelling. Hey! That's my roommate! Mike yells "I'll be back" at us and drives off. And then he pulls up in the grass by the bus stop on the other side, and comes over and we sit back and watch the distruction for awhile. Watching idiots be idiots is quite fun. One girl actually sat behind our car for almost a light cycle and a half before she realized that the car wasn't moving.
Then probably about 15 minutes after Mike shows up, the bum lady actually spouts somethhing useful - why don't you just jump it from his car? DUHHHH. So we pull Blue Steele up heading backwards on the off-ramp facing our car, and pull out the jumper cables. Then we stare at the jumper cables like morons because no one is ever REALLY sure how it goes. Red to the red terminal, black to the black, but don't you have to ground it? Fuck. No one knows. Then, the tow truck from AAA comes to save the day, puts the cables on the batteries (I SWEAR you had to connect it to the frame, not the battery, but I guess the tow truck guy would know) and we start the car. And make it almost all the way home only to have it die before Jared pulls it into a parking spot. So we pushed it. And it was craziness.
In other news, I think I might start a letter-writing campaign to Richard Branson to get him to start something like the X-Prize but for ridiculously efficient engines and alternative fuels instead of space travel. Because really, that dude has too much money and needs somewhere else to spend it

bad things i did this weekend.
- dropped $145 on clothing. in my defense, it was one leather jacket and one really great pair of heels, but still. i shouldn't have done that.
- that's all i can think of.
totally awesome things i did this weekend.
- dropped $145 on clothing. my new jacket is so fucking hot. and it's kenneth cole. and i only paid $120 for it. and it was somewhere in the $300 retail value range. rock. and the other 25 bucks went to a pair of strappy skinny little heels. because every girl needs a pair.
so i'm getting lots of practice wearing high heels now. i'm almost getting okay at it, too. so now when prada hires me for their 2005 campaign i won't fall on my face.

because this is a great way to spend $887 million.
Our government is a bunch of fucktards. We don't need 887 million dollars spent on a fucking anthrax vaccine. Anthrax killed five people in 2001. FIVE. One, two, three, four, FIVE. That's five people. Five people do not warrant $887 million.

So we've entered the final 24 hours. In the next day, we should know who will be the next President. We should be cracking open cheap champagne and getting victoriously drunk because ding dong, the asshole is gone. it should all be over in a matter of hours.
John Kerry will win. He just has to. I don't see any other choice.

Dear Mr. "President":
I am writing to you to express my utter, absolute disappointment in what you have done with this country over the past 4 years. I remember Election Night 2000, and the chaos of the following weeks, culminating in a supreme court decision naming you President of the United States after losing the popular vote but winning Florida, and the Electorate, by just 537 votes. I remember the disappointment, the anger, and the confusion I felt after that - I was just 17, and I had absolute trust in the American system. Your "election" shattered that. From that point forward, I trusted nothing you said or did, and I still don't.
Who knows what you spent the first 8 months of your presidency doing. All I know is that you spent it ignoring the needs of the American people, as well as ignoring your own intelligence agencies. No one liked you much back then, but they didn't really care.
Then came September 11. Shocked, shattered, disbelieving, and absolutely petrified, the nation turned to you to lead us through. And while most people would agree that you did an okay job of it in the first few months, honestly, you never regained MY trust through that time. And I clearly remember thinking that you would attack Iraq for this, even when it wasn't their doing.
But they trusted you, Mr. President. Maybe they had no other option, but they trusted you, and you spoiled that trust. You promised to rid the world of terror, and Osama bin Laden is missing, Iraq is an absolute fucking mess (with over 100,000 civilians dead, they're saying) and there's no way out. And we only invaded Iraq because you were so fucking obsessed with cleaning up your Daddy's old laundry, not because there were any WMD's, or because Saddam was financing terrorism. If you want to find terrorism-financing, look to the Saudis, and to Bush's oil cronies. Just a thought.
Anyway, Mr. President (and I hope I can only call you that for a little while longer), fuck you. Fuck you and your carelessness and your ignorance and your hatred. I hope you rot in hell. If you get re-elected, this country will end up in civil war. I hope you die a lonely, hollow, regret-filled little man with no one who loves you.
Sincerely,
Me

I've just come to the realization that I am just a horribly organized individual. A really hard game for me to play is to open a drawer and play "Take out everything that doesn't belong!!"
In a recent match-up of this game, Kat vs. Underwear Drawer, I came up with the following things: 13 green tea bags, 2 generic brand hot cocoa mix packets, and 1 instant coffee packet; 2 tampons, 1 with the wrapper torn off by the crap in the drawer; 1 checkbook (from my old account); 4 rocks, collected at various beaches; and 6.2 ounces of "miscellaneous garbage crap." Left in the drawer after the game: q-tip, several small coins, box of matches, and miscellaneous jewelry. It makes sense to me, I promise. All my piles and stashes of crap make perfect sense.
I swear.
In other news, I just wrote a blog entry in TextEdit because Blogger was down. That's sad.

Ruben, in response to a comment you wrote on an earlier entry, but i think this justifies its own:
I don't believe anything I'm reading about polls or projections. The media can guess all it feels like who'll win Pennsylvania, but I think we can see the answer to the swing states, nay, all the states, between the lines of this article. [article] The sheer numbers of new voter registrations are ridiculous. Hundreds of thousands of new votes have come in in the last year... in almost every state. And only about 30% (if I remember correctly) of these registrations identified a party. So the other 70% of the new registered voters, accounting for FAR more votes than Gore lost more than one state by in 2000, are "up in the air" according to pollsters... what we don't know is how many of these votes are young people or poor people. Seems to me like the rich and the old were already registered, most likely. People are coming out of the woodwork of the left wing, young people, poor people, and even *gasp* black people are going to vote this time around.
If the election goes off without a major hitch, I'm predicting a 60-40% victory. Goddammit, I better not have jinxed us.

It's a pain in the ass, living in an apartment, sharing the laundry facilities with 7 other people. It really sucks to haul your laundry down a flight of stairs, outside, and into the laundry room, only to discover that someone else had beaten you to it. And then you have to haul it all back upstairs and try again tomorrow night, knowing full well that the energy to get your laundry downstairs comes but once a week.
Blah.

It's cold. It's finally cold! A week away from November and I finally have to wear a hat to the bus stop. Hooray!!! Today's high was just about 50... but it's going to get warmer later this week, which I guess is okay, but I'd rather it stayed cold. Cold and not rainy. It's a wonderful feeling, having to bundle up to go outside... but it considerably cuts down on trips to the grocery store. I blame the weather for the 10 pounds, and counting, I've lost since leaving school. Yeah. Maybe I should market my new diet to the stupid and fat among us. It'll be called the "It's called walking more and eating less, stupid!" diet.
Frida is pretty lovey today, following me around the house and purring (as opposed to following me around the house and meowing, which means "feed me, you cruel human! i'm starving*!") I guess she still hasn't forgiven me for leaving her here alone all weekend. Poor kitty. Maybe if she'd learn to get along with Maxwell (and not pee on Jared's bed) then she'd have more priveleges. We'll work on this.
*footnote: my kitty is not starving. indeed, she is quite the opposite, as she has put on a couple ounces over the past few weeks by eating kitten food. stupid fat-kitty, kitten food is for GROWING KITTENS, not FAT ADULT CATS. That's her new name, fat-kitty.

Smirking right-winger William Kristol said that of Bush vs. Kerry, "He slaughtered him," a manifestly ridiculous contention."

It's wednesday again, which means it's time for america's next top model. i'm so stoked that there's a new season of this show, it is absolutely amazing. bitchfights, posing, and a man known as mrs. j who is more of a diva than tyra banks. i'm not reading any spoilers about who got kicked off tonight ('cause it's over on the east coast) but i'm hoping it's ann, because she's a bitch.
but i'm still bitter that they didn't pick me. they better have a casting call in seattle for season 5 dammit.

Dear Fucking Morons:
Have you registered to vote yet? I didn't think so. I don't understand you people - whining and bitching about how much your life sucks, and not taking the time to think about why your life sucks so much. No job? Want to go to the doctor but can't afford it? Can't afford to pay for gas? Yeah, life really sucks right now. And it's not going to change unless you register to vote before tomorrow. Because after that you're out of time, and you don't get a say in where this country goes over the course of the next four years. Don't let me catch you whining about it, because I'll probably kick you in the teeth, because it's your fault nothing changed, and I hate you for it. Fuckers.
Sincerely,
Me

So I was chillin on the bus on my way home from work today, listening to some Death Cab ('cuz i was in an emo mood) on my 'pod, when these two skater punk high school kids get on and sit down next to me. we're in the three-seater at the back of the bus that faces sideways, so there's three across here, with three others sitting opposite us. i notice as they get on that one of them has white cords hanging down from his ears inside his hoodie. and then after they sit down, the other kid pulls out his shiny white metallic device and plugs white wires into HIS ears. the two of them start laughing and rocking out to their music together, like, look what WE have! so i'm getting self conscious and tired of death cab, so i pull out MY ipod and start changing the tunes. Then i notice the guy sitting across from us laughing. we must have looked like a real-life apple commercial or something. i tried hard not to laugh for awhile and then i got into my music and forgot all about those suckers, because that's what an ipod is for, tuning out unnecessary information.

I just got a great idea for an art installation. I'd call it "ego masturbation" and then have a huge series, probably around 20, of self-portraits. All artists' work is essentially pretentious and ego-masturbatory, the more abstract (conceptually or aesthetically) the more pretentious and masturbatory. It's that whole "you wouldn't get it, it's about ME" thing. My series would only be different in that by admitting to my own pretense and publicly pointing out the ego fellatio, i bring out the irony in others'.
what an awesome idea.

Work blew today. I feel like taking each and every person from accounts payable and ripping their hairs out one by one. and then their toenails. gaaaah. they like to "lose" and "not pay" invoices. pardon me if i'm wrong, but isn't "paying" "invoices" by definition the purpose of having an accounts payable department? Fuckers. And then they went and moved their customer service line onto the general Employee Service Center. So basically I can't talk to anyone in the same building as AP, much less someone in the same room. So I have no way of verifying what the fuck they're doing there. And it drives me nuts. GAAAAH.
anyway. fuck work.
i wish i knew of a way to pay for school, and whether i was going to get in, so that i could start a "days until i'm quitting this damn job" countdown. but, as long as money and admissions are up in the air, i'm suffering in that place indefinitely. hooray.

Ugh, it's Monday again. How does this keep happening to me? At least it's over... work pretty much sucked today as I realized I have too much to get done before the end of the week, and not enough time to do it. Plus it's the end of the month which means rent is due on Frida. And it's a new month, so I have to get a new bus pass. Yuck. Which means I have to keep my spending as low as possible until next Friday, since my new digital camera took a big old bite out of my last paycheck, and there was almost none left when I got paid last friday. Yargh, biweekly paychecks can blow sometimes.
At least I don't have the costs of a brand new kitten... why didn't we take pictures of Maxwell this weekend, Jared??

Yeah, so I just bought a table for my room. This table is the shit. It's desk size, but bar height, and looks oh so classy with my ikea bookcase. I'd post pictures, but my boyfriend has my camera (for craigslisting purposes).
So let's review. Apartment/roommate? Got it on Craigslist. Bed (well, mattress on floor): Craigslist. Desk thing: Craigslist. Fish tank? Craigslist. Friends? Craigslist. Bookcase? ...Ikea.
I'm a craigslist junkie.

Man, you know shit's fucked up when humanitarian organizations are pulling out of iraq. The country is becoming too dangerous for them to be there due to more and more groups kidnapping people. It seems like it's a downward slope, things aren't getting any better than they were a year ago, with Americans retreating from Fallujah (and I don't even want to think about how many people have died there). In the past week the American death toll passed the 1,000 - and here's a scary fact: that is higher than the death toll for the first three years of the Vietnam war. Or, rather, of the first three years American troops were in Vietnam. The Iraqi death toll estimated to be around 12 times that - here's a website with the statistics. That's some fucked up shit.
I guess there is some masochistic side of me that wants things to get bad for a few years. not elsewhere, not in Iraq, not in Russia, but here at home. Americans are so convinced that the way they live now is how it's going to be forever, or that things are only going to get better from here... look at the Republicans' predictions on the economy, and how wrong they've been for the past few years, but everyone keeps looking forward and thinking things will get better. You know what? They aren't, especially if Bush is re-elected.
That's another thing I'm working on coming to terms with - Bush's reelection. It's not that I'm losing hope, it's... that... I'm losing hope. don't get me wrong, I'm still going to vote, and be just as fucking adamant about making my friends vote, as I have been, but it's an uphill battle. But what happens if W does get reelected? Do I flee the country in November? I can't. I don't have enough points for canadian citizenship and I don't have the cash or family elsewhere (i.e. western europe) to run off there. I guess what I'll have to do is stay here and fight the power with whatever means i can.
Fuck the Man. Yes, I did just say that on my blog. Homeland Security, do me your worst.

You'd think my goldfish weren't getting enough to eat, watching them attack the algae wafer i dropped into my tank to feed Seamus, my plecostomus. But no, they aren't going hungry, they're just goldfish. Goldfish do three things: eat, swim, and poop. They're just damn entertaining when they do the first two of those, at least. They're getting bigger, too, which excites me. I can tell Agent Scully is way happier in 20 gallons than she was in 1 gallon, and the other two new fish (Marcellus Wallace and Orange Fish) are doing awesome too. Such happy little swimmy goldfish.
this brings me to my second thought. I need a digital camera, badly. i want to have a photo blog. My life is far more visually interesting now than it was 3 years ago when i started this blog (holy shit, it HAS been that long. Check the archive links on the side for proof). I want to post pictures of my kitty being goofy on catnip, my goldfish fighting over algae wafers, my new bookshelf and room, and all that fun stuff. Maybe even photo-j my daily commute, or interesting things in the neighborhood, of which there are plenty. I wish I could have documented the fire in the building behind us from the beginning - or at least the aftermath - because now they're pretty much done cleaning up and they'll probably start rebuilding soon. I wish I could show you the view from Gasworks Park at sunset. I need a digital camera, and that's that.
But I must not buy one until I've paid off my snowboard boots and my ipod and at least most of my computer. Me having a credit card is kind of a bad thing.
